Vernell Vaughn, a life long resident of Cleveland was born November 20, 1923 in Ellis County, Oklahoma to John Loren and Rachel Lizzie (Brant) Hurst. Vernell graduated from May High School in 1942. She moved to Tulsa after graduation and was employed as a Legal Seceratary. She resided with her brother and Sister Barbara Lee and J.L. Hurst while living in Tulsa. June 15, 1946 Vernell was united in marriage to Jerry Vaughn in Tulsa, Oklahoma; she came to the Bear Creek area as a young bride. Vernell and her husband Jerry had a Grade A Dairy, farmed, raised chickens as well as sold eggs. They lived on this farm along Bear Creek until the U.S. Government bought part of their land for the Keystone Lake. In the summer of 1964 they moved to the other corner of their property into a house that they had built themselves.

Vernell was a very talented artist and enjoyed sharing her talent with others. She also enjoyed feeding the birds in her yard, reading, playing cards, playing the violin and piano. Vernell also enjoyed her garden as well as to raise flowers. Vernell was an accomplished seamstress while making all of the families clothing.

Vernells hobbies even expanded into painting placques for members of the Pawnee County Sheriff's Office. Vernell also took her paintings to the Mannford Senior Citizens to decorate their walls. She painted shirts for members of the Keystone Friendship Club. She was a active member in the Mannford Senior Citizens, where she spent a lot of time as well as a member of the Keystone Friendship Club.

Vernell was very courageous in her fight against cancer never complaining.

Vernell passed away April 14, 2003 at Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 79 years 4 months and 24 days. Preceded in death by her parents, husband Jerry, siblings Hazel Pound, Violet Smith, Cash Hurst and J.L. Hurst Jr.

Survived by her Daughters, Judy Dunn of Cleveland, Oklahoma; Irene Gauger of Clevleand, Oklahoma; Jinger Jenkins of Barnsdall, Oklahoma; Sisters, Glessnell Smith; Barbara Lee Thorpe of Vici, Oklahoma; Glendena Weiszbrod of Fort Supply, Oklahoma; five Grandchildren, John and Jerry Dunn, Chris Gauger, Anita and Billy Jenkins, seven Great Grandchildren, Harley, Joey, Anna, Kota, Brandon, Kelsey & Sam as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

Services will be held Thursday, April 17, 2003 at 10:00 am in the Chapman-Black Chapel with services officiated by Rev. David Head of the Western Heights Baptist Church. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
