Sandra Lair

Sandra Lee Lair of Lakeview, Arkansas, passed away December 23, 2023, in Mountain Home, Arkansas at the age of 86. She was born May 1, 1937, in Lawton, Oklahoma, the daughter of Lee and Eula Waggoner Hunter. She married John Lair on April 19, 1957, in Lawton, Oklahoma. Sandra lived in Lakeview since moving from Cleveland, Oklahoma, in 2013. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bull Shoals.

Sandy grew up in Lawton Oklahoma and spent her childhood hiking, fishing, and camping in the Wichita Mountains. Sandy’s love of the outdoors continued throughout her life and family vacations usually meant visiting state parks and camping. Sandy’s family was the focus of her life. Later in life, she and John enjoyed RVing, especially in the western US, and spent one summer living and working in Yellowstone National Park.

Sandy’s career was as a secretary in the US government. She served on various bases in Oklahoma, but her two favorite assignments were at The Wichita Wildlife Refuge outside Lawton and the McDonnell Douglas aircraft plant in Tulsa.

Sandy truly never met a stranger. She always had a smile and kind word for everyone. Her church family and community were an important part of her life. Even as her health deteriorated and dementia ravaged her brain, she attended church when possible. Oh how she loved singing hymns!

Sandra is survived by her husband, John Lair of Lakeview, AR; son, Charles (Cindy Self) Lair of Waynesville, GA; two daughters, Nina (Robert) Kaufmann of Port St. Joe, FL, and Lori (Ronnie) Simmons of Cleveland, OK; six grandchildren, Meske Owens, Jennifer (Chris) Starrett, Misty (Sam) Maxwell, Karmen (Jonathan Cooper) Kaufmann, Kyle (Jennifer) Lair, and Lonnie (Stephen) Carpenter; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Howard Hunter; and sister, Sherry Hunter.
