Funeral services for Mitchell Dewey Sharpnack will be held 3:00 pm Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at the First Christian Church with David Logsdon officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Oklahoma under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home. Mitch was born on February 4, 1922, in rural Cleveland, Oklahoma. He was the son of Calvin James, Jr. and Emma E. (Lofton) Sharpnack. Mitch began his education in Cleveland attending the Westside School. He later graduated from Cleveland High School with the Class of 1940. Following graduation Mitch began working in Wichita, Kansas driving an ice truck. On January 28, 1943, Mitch was called to duty with the United States Army Air Corps. Mitch was stationed with the 441st Bomber Squadron. Mitch served his country in the following areas: Normandy, Southern France, Rome, Arno Rhineland Ardennes, Northern France and Central Europe as a glider mechanic. During his time in the service he obtained the following decorations: Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with one Silver Service Star and two Bronze Service Stars, Distinguished Unite Badge and the American Theater Ribbon. Following his honorable discharge on November 20, 1945, Staff Sergeant Mitch Sharpnack returned to Cleveland, Oklahoma. In 1945, Mitch began working for Texaco as a relief helper. On October 5, 1946, Mitch was united in marriage to Charlene Barnes in Sedan, Kansas. The two returned to Cleveland where they have continued to reside. Mitch began working full time for Texaco in Oilton prior to being transferred to the Hominy station. Mitch worked as a roustabout for many years and later advanced to pumper. Mitch worked for Texaco for over 38 years when he retired in 1983. Mitch had many hobbies during his life and most of them included being outdoors. He loved to go quail hunting and raised bird dogs as well as quail for many years. Mitch was an avid to say the least Detroit Tigers fan and loved watching sports. Most of the time he would watch two games at once. He also enjoyed visiting with friends which was usually occurred at the post office. Mitch loved being around children especially when his nieces and nephews were younger. Mitch has made a very big lifelong impression on each of his nieces and nephews. Survivors are his wife of over 66 years Charlene of the home as well as numerous neices, nephews and friends. Mitch was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin, Jr. and Emma Sharpnack, three brothers, Harry, Robert and Roy Sharpnack as well as one sister Mary Ann Sharpnack.
