Garry James Cox was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on January 5, 1962 to Jeannine and Bill Cox. Garry spent all his childhood years and young adult life in Cleveland, Oklahoma, where he formed lifelong friendships and first met the love of his life, Debra. The two were high school sweethearts at Cleveland High School and married March 30, 1984, building a life together filled with love, perseverance, and family.
Garry started working his first job at Brown Brothers, drilling as a derrick hand and then went on to work for Oklahoma Tool Company. In the early 90’s he attended Tulsa Welding School where he graduated, then moving on to work for Word Industries, and then he worked at the Cleveland golf course. After this he became self-employed working on small engines and around local mechanic shops. He was a true jack of all trades, gifted in auto mechanics, artistry, welding and more. Whether it was fixing a car, drawing a design, or crafting something with his hands, Garry approached everything with dedication and pride. As he often said, “If you’re going to do something, do it right.”
Garry had a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and racing cars. He was a devoted fan of OU football, the Pittsburgh Steelers, boxing and NASCAR. A lover of music, he often listened to classic ‘80s rock and country. His artistic side was just as strong. He enjoyed wood burning, drawing and connecting with animals, especially his beloved pets: His dog Smokie, Maxamillion (his Persian cat), and Sugar, a rescue dog who brought him great comfort.
Garry is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Debra Cox; his son, James Cox; his daughter, Courtney Cox; his brother, Bobby Cox; and his sister, Donna Lindsay-Wilcoxson. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, humor, love for family, and the simple joy of a well-told story or a shared laugh. His famous saying- “There’s a pork chop in every can.” Will be remembered with a smile by those who knew him best. Garry will be deeply missed and forever loved.
