Eugene Byers

Eugene Franklin Byers passed away from this life on October 26, 2023, at the age of 87, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Gene was born on November 11, 1935, in Osage, Oklahoma, the son of Floyd Que and Opal (Young) Byers.  Gene grew up and attended school in Osage, Oklahoma, graduating as the Salutatorian with the Class of 1954.  During his time in school, Gene was a member of the basketball team.  Following high school, Gene joined the United States Army.  He served with the Headquarters Battery 549th AAA Battalion stationed in Thule, Greenland.  Private Byers returned to Osage, Oklahoma upon his discharge in 1956.  Gene worked for a short time on the pipeline before accepting an officer’s position with the Hominy Police Department.  In the late 1950s, Gene returned to working on the pipeline. Then, in 1967, he joined the IUOE Local 627.  While working in South Dakota, Gene met Dorothy Shyne.  The couple was later united in marriage on January 8, 1968.  Gene traveled throughout the United States, working for many years in the industry, retiring in 1997.

Gene accepted his Lord and Savior at the age of eight years old at a revival at the Osage Church.  It was very important to him that his family believed in the Lord.  Gene was proud of his military service and his time as a police officer in Hominy, Oklahoma.  Gene’s parents and pipeline friends had a significant effect on his life.  Going fishing, playing dominoes at the senior citizens’ center in Cleveland, picking pecans, and hunting for mushrooms were some of his favorite things to do.  Gene was also a long-time member of the Cleveland Hebron Lodge #215.

Survivors are his son Randy Byers and wife Cheryl of Cleveland, Oklahoma; two siblings, Jack Byers of Illinois and Betty Carpenter of Niceville, Florida; two grandchildren, Dr. Jacob Que Byers and wife Courtney of Norman, Oklahoma, Caitlin Byers and David Anthony Corona of Weirton, West Virginia, great-granddaughter Scarlett Victoria Byers and a host of other relatives and friends.  Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Que and Opal Byers, wife Dorothy Byers, and three brothers, Kenneth Byers, James Byers, and Fred Byers.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 3, 2023, at the Western Heights Baptist Church, with Pastor David Head officiating.  The burial will be held in the Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Oklahoma, under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.  Friends and family may visit an online guest book and memorial page for Eugene at www.chapman-black.com. in lieu of flowers, the family would like a donation to be made to J.C. Byers Memorial Library (918) 358-2676 or Meals on Wheels (918)625-9254.
