Ann Ormston, 85, passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2026. She was born to Glenn and Ollie Campbell in Hominy, Oklahoma, on a cold January day in 1941. The family resided in Cleveland until Ann was in pre-school, when Glenn was drafted into the Navy and was stationed in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Ollie and Ann took the train to Florida, where Ann found changing cars to get to the dining car especially nerve wracking. Ann shared some really fun memories of very large spiders from her time in Florida. After a short residency there, the war ended and the family returned to Cleveland where she welcomed her little sister, Janie.
After graduating Cleveland High School in 1959, Ann attended Oklahoma State University. While she was very interested in botany, she ultimately obtained a degree in mathematics along with her teaching certificate. Post-graduation, she taught high school math at Star Spencer in Oklahoma City. Despite enjoying some aspects of teaching, she determined that she wanted to seek a higher degree in mathematics. She became a graduate assistant at the University of Oklahoma where she pursued a Master's degree. Before she could complete that degree, she crossed paths with a recruiter for the US Navy who convinced her to become a civilian contractor, working on submarine plans at the Naval Services Weapons Center in Dahlgren, Virginia. This began her satisfying and exotic career as a mathematician for the US Navy.
While at Dahlgren, Ann met a handsome chemist named Gary Ormston. They wed in 1967 and in the following few years welcomed son, David, and daughter, Cheryl, into the family. In 1977, the allure of Cleveland brought Ann back, where the family's final member, daughter Susan, made her debut. After several years of raising children, Ann began working at the Palace Drug Store both as a pharmacy tech and a bookkeeper.
Throughout her life, Ann was very involved in her community. She was raised in Cleveland's First Baptist Church, and upon her return, she resumed her participation in church activities. She worked in the nursery, volunteered at VBS, taught Sunday school for groups ranging in age from children to adults, sang with the choir, and helped serve funeral dinners. She especially enjoyed working with the quilting ministry and took tremendous satisfaction from fellowship with the women in the group as well as the work they did.
Elsewhere in the community, Ann was passionate about the public library. For many years, she was a member of the library board and worked on behalf of the Friends of the Library. She was also very involved with the Girl Scouts. Later in life, she and Gary regularly delivered portable meals to local residents. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, quilting, and reading, sometimes seemingly doing all of them at once.
In her later years, she moved to the Baptist Village in Broken Arrow. She enjoyed spending time with her neighbors and eating the delicious meals provided, without the hassle of cleaning up. While she did miss many aspects of her life in Cleveland, she was always grateful that she could still touch her toes and pick up anything that she dropped.
Ann is survived by her children, David Ormston and his wife Kara, Cheryl Tramell and her husband Brooks, Susan Ormston and her husband Therman Lee, her grandchildren, Katy and Matthew Ormston, Brooks and Jolie Tramell, Brittani Reynolds and Brooke Webster, and her sister Janie Walker and her family. Ann was preceded in death by her husband Gary and her parents.
Donations can be made in Ann's honor to the "Friends of the Jay C Byers Memorial Library" at 215 E Wichita, Cleveland, OK 74020, or to "Portable Meals" at PO Box 191, Cleveland, OK 74020. The family would like to thank members of the FBC Cleveland for the frequent visits and prayer, the Baptist Village of Broken Arrow, and Angela from Trinity Hospice and Eugenia from Synergy for the outstanding care they provided to Ann in her final days.
