Dr. Richard Thomas Glass, 77, of Tulsa, passed away on June 18, 2018.
Tom was born on March 9, 1941, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was the son of Charles Elmo and Sydney Martha (Peters) Glass. Tom grew up in the Miami, Florida; a member of a prominent pioneering Florida family. He graduated Miami Edison High School in 1959, Emory University and Dental School in 1965; later commissioned as a U.S. Naval Officer and then graduating from the University of Chicago. He was a board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist. For over 23 years he served as the chief forensic dentist for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Oklahoma. Tom was a professor of forensic sciences, pathology and dental medicine. Dr. Glass taught at the University of Oklahoma Medical School in Oklahoma City, and after retiring was an adjunct professor for microbiology at the Oklahoma State University. Tom has been involved in numerous medical and legal cases, as an expert, and directed the dental team that identified the 167 bodies recovered from the aftermath of the 1995 Alfred P. Murrah Building bombing. Tom has authored numerous books and medical articles published in many of the medical journals. He has received several awards and accolades throughout his career, and perhaps the most important to him was the Sigma Chi Fraternity Significant Sig Award presented nationally to outstanding alumni and leaders.
Dr. Glass has written numerous poems. He loved to spend his free time on the boat at Skiatook Lake, fishing, playing golf and returning to his home state of Florida. One of his most memorable trips was to Victoria, British Columbia. Tom has traveled all over the world giving lectures and presentations about his knowledge of pathology. He has been voted as one of the top 200 clinicians in the World for his works. Most of all in life Dr. Glass loved to be with his family and having his grandkids around him who he loved dearly.
Survivors include his loving wife of 12 years, Cathy; his three sons and daughters-in-law; Richard and Amy of Dallas, Texas, Michael and Andrea of Denver, Matthew, and Laura of Tampa Bay, Florida; his brother Charles and Peggy of Leesburg, Jimmy and Janet of Atlanta, Georgia; Tom is additionally survived by Cathy’s children and their spouses Amy and Ryan Hedges of Cleveland; Jeff Day and Jyl Curry of Tulsa, Oklahoma; along with numerous grandchildren who knew hims as Grandpa Tommy: Rebecca, Jonathan, Joseph, Joshua, Shannon and Rose Glass; Austin and Addie Glass, J.W. David and Campbell Glass, Aspen Raynee and Wyatt Hedges with many beloved cousins, nephews and nieces. Tom was preceded in death by his parents.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and thanks to Tom’s physicians and Cura Hospice Caregivers. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 am, Friday, June 21, 2018, at the Chapman-Black Funeral Home Chapel.
