Zola May Guthrie

Zola May Guthrie, passed away on Monday, November 14, 2011 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 67 years 2 months and two days. Zola was born on September 12, 1944 in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Jess and Joy (Claypool) Bruton. As a young girl Zola was raised in the Sand Springs area where she attended school and later graduated from Charles Page High School. Soon after high school Zola began working at the local sewing factory for Haggar Clothing Company. After some time with Haggar she then accepted employment at the Liberty Glass Company where she worked until the late 1960ís. On May 1, 1970, Zola was united in marriage to Avery William Guthrie in Cleveland, Oklahoma. After their marriage Zola and Avery made their home in Westport. The couple was an active part of the roundup club and traveled to many rodeo events. Unknown too many, Zola was an active team roper that only a few women have ever done. Zola loved to take care of people and gained employment at Hissom in Sand Springs where she worked until the closure of the facility. After the death of Avery, Zola continued to reside in Cleveland for a couple of years before moving to Mannford; several months later Zola moved to Hallett where she has continued to reside since 2006. Zola had an extensive collection of cookie jars. She would go to garage sales, estate sales and flea markets to find the perfect piece to add to her collection. Zola also enjoyed painting and most of all loved the times when her family would visit so she could cook for each and every one of them. Survivors are her mother, Joy Bruton of Mannford, Oklahoma, daughter, Sondra Jones and her husband Steve of Hallett, Oklahoma, son Jess Guthrie and Phyllis Mabrey of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; step-sons, Anthony and Marcela Guthrie of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Bruce and Joan Guthrie of Muskogee, Oklahoma, Jeff and Kathy Guthrie of Cleveland, Oklahoma and Tom and Gayle Guthrie of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, two sisters sisters, Melba Jo Bruton of Hallett, Oklahoma, Ellen Kelly and her husband Gary of Mannford, Oklahoma, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Jess Bruton, husband, Avery William Guthrie and a granddaughter Leigh Michelle Angell. Chapel Services will be held 10:30 am Friday, November 18, 2011 at Chapman-Black Funeral Home with Rev. Delores Terrell officiating. The body will be cremated following the services and interred in the Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
