Vinita Comer, lifelong Cleveland area resident, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 in Hominy, Oklahoma at the age of eighty-four years. Vinita was born in Taney, County, Missouri on February 25, 1925; she was the daughter of Alex J. I. and Mary Ellen (Shaw) Bartley. She was their only daughter and had four brothers, Ray, the twins, Fount Boyd and Thomas Loyd and Vernon. The Bartley family always knew her as ìSisî or ìSisterî. She moved with her family as an infant to the Keystone area of rural Pawnee County in Oklahoma; later residing in the Sand Springs and the Tanglewood area before moving back to Keystone. Vinita started school in Tanglewood and then completed her education at the Leroy School. Vinita was married to Roy Dan ìJackî Comer on June 2, 1943 at the First Methodist Church in Cleveland. When Jack returned from serving his country in the United States Army in World War II the couple made their home in Cleveland. In 1955, the Comer family moved to Farmington, New Mexico when Jack accepted employment with Empire Drilling. Vinita and Jack returned their family to Cleveland in 1960 and have made the Cleveland area their home the remainder of their life. After Jackís retirement in 1978, the couple enjoyed traveling. Their adventures included trips to Canada, Colorado, Alaska and many other states. The couple also enjoyed spending time together in their vegetable and flower gardens. Jack preceded her in death on June 1, 2003 after sixty years of marriage. In addition to gardening and traveling, Vinita was an avid collector of Redbirds and also enjoyed assisting her daughter, Marilyn with her sewing. Vinita dedicated her life to providing a caring and loving home for her husband and family and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a devoted family person and spent countless hours assisting with the care of her mother during her final days. Vinita was an excellent cook and was known for her chicken and dumplings and cherry cobbler. Additionally, she made great blackberry jelly and was said to have passed it off to her grandchildren as grape jelly. Vinita was a charter member of the Oakhill Baptist Church, attending church in the garage of her brother, Vernon and June Bartleyís home in the early beginning of the church. Later the church moved to its current location on Keystone Lake and was re-chartered as the Oakhill Church of Keystone Lake. She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Marilyn and Larry Brown of Hominy, Oklahoma; a son and his wife, Danny and Mary Comer of Mannford, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Daniel Comer of Jenks, Oklahoma, Darrin and wife Sharon Comer of Terlton, Oklahoma, Johnnie Brown of Hominy, Oklahoma, Gary and wife Tiercy Brown of Hominy, Oklahoma, Marsha Clark and Adam Thompson of Cleveland, Oklahoma and Santha Comer of Tulsa, Oklahoma; fifteen great-grandchildren, Vance Landers of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Lani Chailer and husband Chris of Mannford, Oklahomam, Demi Comer of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Shawn and Alex Brown of San Antonio, Texas, Emily, J. R.,Baily Wyatt Clark and Rowdy Thompson of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Damon Comer of Terlton, Oklahoma, Destiney and Bethany Shouse of Terlton, Oklahoma and Codie and Kylie Brown of Hominy, Oklahoma; great great-grandchild, Logan Chailer of Mannford, Oklahoma; a brother, Vernon and his wife, June Bartley of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; a sister-in-law, Norma Bartley of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; and a host of other relatives and friends who mourn her passing. In addition to her husband, Vinita was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Thomas L., Ray and Fount Bartley. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, June 1, 2009 at the Chapman-Black Funeral Home with Gene Black, Certified Funeral Celebrant, officiating. Interment will be at the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
