Funeral services for Vernon Morrison will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at 2:00 pm in the Chapman-Black Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Harrell Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Jennings Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home. A memorial website for Vernon has been set up at www.chapman-black.com for friends and family.

Vernon Lee Morrison was born in Indianola, Oklahoma on October 5, 1930. He was the son of August and Velma (Hayes) Morrison. Vernon grew up and attended school in Indianola and was a active part of the baseball and basketball teams. After the completion of his high school Vernon joined the United States Army. Vernon saw action in the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his actions on March 11, 1951. His platoon was under intense fire and wounded a man of the platoon. Vernon evacuated and placed the man in a safe place securing medical attention all while under fire from the enemy. Following his honorable discharge Vernon returned to Oklahoma.

Vernon was a talented baseball player and played semi pro in Clay Center, Kansas for a couple of years. He later moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma and began working at Chick Norton Buick in Tulsa, Oklahoma. During the time Vernon was working at the Buick Dealership a young lady came in to have her car serviced. He told his coworkers that one day he would marry that lady. Following a month of daily calls, Vernon and Nicki went on their first date with a fairy tale life to follow. On May 4, 1956, in Sand Springs, Oklahoma; Vernon and Nicki were united in marriage. The couple has resided in California, Tulsa and later moved to Jennings where they have resided most of the married life.

Vernon worked in the automotive industry in the body repair division for many years. He received many award from GM for his spectacular service and quality control. Once he retired from working in the body shop he gained employment as a independent adjuster. Vernon was later asked by his nephew Robert Bias to help him with his company T&R Refuse. Vernon helped Robert for many years until he fully retired.

Vernon loved to work and grow a garden. He shared many of his vegetables with his friends and family. Vernon was an avid fisherman, golfer and bowler. Vernon played golf regularly for many years. He was also active in a bowling league for many years at Harvard Lanes. Vernon and Nicki loved to travel and go places; one of their most memorable trips was to Hawaii in early 2000. Vernon was a 32nd Degree Mason and former member of the Moose Lodge. The couple were longtime members of Oak Hill Church of Keystone Lake.

Vernon passed from this life on Wednesday, August 3, 2016, in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 85 years.

Survivors are his wife of over 60 years Nicki of the home; daughter Linda Bredenger and her husband Jim of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two sisters Janice Cuzalina of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Shirley Vincent and Lenn of Haymarket, Virginia; two grandchildren Chris Stout and his wife Leah of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Stacy Huggins and her husband Bill of Tulsa, Oklahoma; five great grandchildren Ashlyn, Ryan and Cambry Stout, Jillian and Sam Huggins and a host of family and friends. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Benny Morrison.
