Thomas Guthrie

Thomas Avery Guthrie passed from this life on February 23, 2019, at the age of 68 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Tom was born on March 28, 1950, in Terlton, Oklahoma. He was the son of Avery William and Ruth (Robison) Guthrie. Tom attended elementary at Rigsby and later graduated from Cleveland High School with the Class of 1968. He was active in football and FFA.

Following graduation, Tom joined the United States Army in May of 1968. He served his country for three years and was honorably discharged on May 20, 1971. During his time in the military, he was awarded the following decorations and citations: The National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal as well as the Expert M-16 Badge with two OS Bars. After serving in Vietnam, Specialist Tom Guthrie returned from Germany to Cleveland, Oklahoma. On June 14, 1971, Tom was united in marriage to Gale Annette Miller in Miami, Oklahoma. They established their initial home in Terlton before eventually making a home west of Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Tom worked as a welder for many years and later developed the skills to become a machinist. He was employed at Armco, Superior Hardsurfacing, Flobend and ultimately retired from CustoFab in 2012.

Tom enjoyed working on things. He loved doing things for Gale and would spend most of his time tinkering on different projects. Hunting, as well as fishing, were favorite pastimes for him, and he always enjoyed cheering on his favorite team the Dallas Cowboys as well as reading his favorite Louis L'Amour novels. Tom and Gale have been longtime members of Trinity Baptist Church in Tulsa. He served as Deacon and Sunday School teacher, and spent many Tuesday evenings at Robertson Elementary sharing his love of Jesus with the children there.

The family enjoyed taking yearly trips to Roaring River in Cassville, Missouri. First with his children and later with his grandchildren, Tom loved spending time on the river and back at camp.

Tom was a gentle, kind, and patient man. He loved his family dearly; however, Jesus was his first love. Tom prayed daily to be kind and patient towards other people. On numerous occasions, he went out of his way to help others.

Survivors include his wife Gale, son Brett, daughter Rose and son-in-law Matthew Tavaglione; grandchildren Lauren, Nathan and Miller Tavaglione; sister Sondra Jones and brothers Anthony and Jess Guthrie. Tom was preceded in death by his father Avery Guthrie, mother Ruth Briggs and brothers Bruce & Jeff Guthrie.

Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, March 1, 2019, at the Trinity Baptist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma with Rev. Rod Harris officiating. Private burial was held on Monday at the Sinnett Cemetery in Cleveland, Oklahoma with Chapman-Black Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements.
