Thelma Ruth Hitt, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2014, in Dell Rapids, South Dakota at the age of 86 years, seven months and ten days. Thelma was born January 27, 1928, in Barnwell, South Carolina. She was the daughter of Charlie F. and Elizabeth (Sanders) Black. Thelma was raised in Langley, South Carolina. She was later united in marriage to Leonard Albert Hitt on May 25, 1946, in Lexington, South Carolina. The couple moved to Kansas in the fall of 1946 where they remained until 1994. During her time in Kansas, Thelma worked for Fruhaus Uniforms in Wichita for many years. In 1994, Thelma and Leonard moved to the Boston Pool area of Hominy. Thelma remained in the Cleveland area until 2012, when she moved to South Dakota to be closer to her daughter Lynda. Thelma was a very caring lady and liked all kinds of flowers. She also enjoyed bird watching and really enjoyed her property in rural Osage County near Boston Pool. Thelma was very contnet because it was very peaceful. Survivors are her daughter and her husband, Lynda and Evan Burkett of Hartford, South Dakota; sister Frances and her husband Herman Hall of Graniteville, South Carolina; brother Edgar and his wife Helen Black of Langley, South Carolina; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie F. and Elizabeth Black; two sons Albert and Murphy Hitt; three brothers, Troy Black, A. J. Black, Milton Black and one sister Annie Black. Services will be held 11:00 am, Monday, September 15, 2014, at Chapman-Black Chapel. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
