Robert Marvin Thompson, 75, passed from this life on Friday, May 25, 2018, at the Cleveland Manor Nursing Home.
Robert was born December 21, 1942, in Jacksonville, Illinois. He was the son of Glenn Edwin and Arvy Elaine (Drake) Thompson. As a young child Robert moved with his family to the Denver, Colorado area. Robert graduated from Arvada High School in Denver with the Class of 1960. Robert was a member of the choir and received the accolades of Honor and All City Choir as well as an Eagle Scout. He had a wonderful voice and made a recording at one point in his young career. Following high school Robert joined the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Irwin, California. During his time in the service Robert obtained the following decorations and citations: Expert with the M-1 Rifle, Pistol and the MKM Carbine. On October 12, 1962, Robert was honorably discharged from the United States Army. Robert moved to Florida at that time where he remained until 1964, working for surveying company. In the early 1970’s Robert returned to Colorado, he began working with an insurance agency before gaining employment with Best Glass as a salesman. On October 4, 1979 in Georgetown, Colorado, Robert was united in marriage to Mary Travers. Robert also worked at Broadway Discount as a food sales manager before moving to Ringling, Oklahoma. During his time in Ringling, Robert worked for Hagman’s Inc as a salesman. He always had a yearning to speak the word of God and later obtained his ministry certification. Robert initially started preaching the word of God at the American Baptist Church in Englewood, Colorado. Robert later began pastoring at Spavinaw First United Methodist Church. He also preached at Salina and Wister following the assignment in Spavinaw. After many years in the ministry Robert retired from full time work as a minister. In 2003, Robert and Mary moved to Cleveland where they have continued to reside.
Robert had many hobbies he especially loved building things out of wood as well as a staunch Denver Bronco’s fan. He also enjoyed going trout fishing, reading history and favored Mayan, European and religious history. Robert had an extensive collection of DVDs. Some of his favorite shows were on the animal planet as well as the history channel and the only news channel FoxNews. Robert and Mary enjoyed going to Manitou Springs, Colorado, Eureka Springs and Branson for vacations. He loved the outdoors and snow skiing when he was younger. Robert also loved his coffee, chocolate doughnuts, cookies and chocolate. Robert and Mary also enjoyed the times they would get together with their friends for dinner and go to the Dinner Play House or the Buck Snort to get a hamburger. Most of all in life Robert loved his Lord, grandchildren, and family very much.
Survivors are wife Mary of the home; four children Robert Thompson and his wife Vicki of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Charlotte Leverett and her husband Steve of Justin, Texas, Antoinette Massey of Ardmore, Oklahoma, JoAnne Guzman of Huntsville, Alabama; siblings Sandra Orsborn and her husband David of Arvada, Colorado; fourteen grandchildren; twenty four great grandchildren, one great-great-grandson. In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by one granddaughter Andrea Woods.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Escape Ministries with Pastor Bob Thompson officiating. Friends may share a memory with the family online at www.chapman-black.com. Fort Sill Honor Guard will provide military honors. Chapman-Black Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.
