Rita Fay Burgess

Rita Fay Burgess passed from this life on June 1, 2023, at the age of 69, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Rita was born on September 23, 1953, in Hominy, Oklahoma, the daughter of Eugene Delbert and Alma Lea (Cypert) Horton. Rita grew up and attended school in Prue, where she completed her education. On December 17, 1970, Rita was united in marriage to Gary Lee Burgess, Sr, in Prue, Oklahoma. Following their marriage, Rita and Gary established their initial home in Sand Springs. They soon returned to Prue, Oklahoma, where they remained for over 30 years before moving to Cleveland in 2010. Rita worked for several years at MunsingWear, St. Johns Medical Center, Cleveland Area Hospital, and Hominy Hospital, and they owned the Prue Quick Stop. She was last employed as a custodian at the Prue Public School for five years. Rita also was a healthcare provider to many people in the area.

Rita always enjoyed going out to eat with her family. Attending family functions was very important to her. Rita, on occasion, liked quilting and crocheting when she had the time. Feeding the hummingbirds and working in her garden, reviving everyone's plants were favorite pastimes. Collecting furniture, going to estate sales, and swapping furniture with people were also things Rita enjoyed. Cooking everyone's favorite dish during holidays and family events was her specialty. Being outdoors, sitting by the campfire, and going to the ocean were memorable times.

Survivors are her husband, Gary, of the home; three sons, Gary Burgess, Jr and wife Rachelle of Cleveland, Oklahoma; Jesse Burgess and her grandest Lilly of Prue, Oklahoma; Ely Burgess of Prue, Oklahoma; four brothers, Johnny Horton, Marty Horton, Larry Horton, and Isaac Horton; four sisters Zetta Horton, Sandra Smith, Brenda Owens, Karen Horton, three grandchildren Skyla, Ella, and Ruby as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Rita was preceded in death by her parents, Delbert and Alma Horton, two sisters, Beverly Paddock and Alma Biggs, as well as a brother Wayne Horton.

Services will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm Sunday, June 11, 2023, at the Cleveland Community Center. Chapman-Black Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements. Friends and family may visit an online guest book and memorial page for Rita at www.chapman-black.com.
