Ray Leon Powell was born in San Marcos, Texas on August 31, 1966. He was the son of Leon and Marilyn (Mosell) Powell. Ray was raised in the San Marcos area and attended school there, graduating from San Marcos High School in 1985. While attending high school, Ray was an active member of the Future Farmers of America where he raised and showed animals.
Upon graduation from high school, Ray enrolled at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. During this time, Ray became an avid bicyclist participating in events all over south Texas. He was extremely active in the Bike MS project providing significant changes to the lives of people affected by multiple sclerosis. For several years, he annually participated in the MS 150, a two-day 150-mile fundraising bike ride organized by the National MS Society, South Central Chapter. The ride is the largest event of its kind in North America, with 13,000 cyclists, 3,500 volunteers, and countless spectators along the route from Houston and at the finish line in Austin. Ray was a friend to many people and touched a lot of lives. On an occasion when a close friend was injured in a motorcycle accident, Ray assisted in his friend's rehabilitation and desire to ride in the MS 150 by riding a tandem bike with him and his friend’s father.
Ray continued his education in Corpus Christi, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree then a Master’s degree in Finance and Accounting from Regis University, Denver, Colorado. During this time, he was employed as a financial advisor for a company in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Ray also enjoyed farming, gardening and planting trees. He loved nature and birds. Ray enjoyed riding motorcycles and often took long rides just to enjoy the country side and scenery. He took his last ride on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at the age of fifty years, ten months and ten days.
Ray is survived by his parents, Leon and Marilyn Powell of San Marcos, Texas; four brothers, Randy Powell and his wife, Maria Whitehorn of Hominy, Oklahoma, Robby and Maria Powell of San Antonio, Texas, Ronny Powell of Austin, Texas, Russell and Jennifer Powell of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, and sister-in-law, Darla Powell of Denton; former wife, Michelle Powell and her family including a step-grandson, Jaxson who Ray had a very close relationship with; numerous nieces and nephews and other family and friends who will mourn his passing. Ray was preceded in death by his brother, Ricky Powell.
Cremation was entrusted to Chapman-Black Funeral Home in Cleveland, Oklahoma.
