Ramona “Mona” Powell Johnson
Ramona “Mona” Powell Johnson, seventy-six, passed away in Tulsa, Oklahoma on August 7, 2017 after complications following a routine medical procedure. Mona was born on September 20, 1940 in Hominy, Oklahoma to Luetta Elizabeth and Walter Raymond Powell. She spent her childhood in the rural Wildhorse community in Osage County, Oklahoma in a residential addition located on an oil lease where her father was employed. She attended Wildhorse School and later graduated from Osage High School where she was crowned homecoming queen and enjoyed playing basketball.

Mona continued her education at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. She meet Coyote Johnson, who had recently returned from Germany in the US Army Corp of Engineers and was employed in Tulsa. They were married on September 19, 1963 and established their residence in Tulsa.

Mona became very passionate about volunteer work. As a breast cancer survivor, she volunteered in various capacities to raise awareness and funding for research. She was also a dedicated volunteer for the Gilcrease Museum in various capacities and functions, meeting many interesting people. She volunteered to take pledges for OETA and PBS fundraisers. Family was also very important to her. Mona and her sister Inez cared intensively for their mother in her final days.

After Coyote and a business partner formed a company to design and manufacture flight crew simulators, flight training equipment and an advanced automated driver’s license testing system, Mona traveled with Coyote to various airline training centers, states and providences in Canada. They enjoyed trade shows at Lake Tahoe.

Mona was an avid reader and had an extensive collection of her favorite novels and historical books which she shared with her friends and family. She made sure that their retirement home which was completed in 2003 had a library that would accommodate their collection.

Mona is survived by her husband of fifty-four years; siblings Bobbie Hulet, Walter Raymond “Bud” Powell Jr. and Leon Powell; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Georgia Ann Gordon and Inez “Nez” Powell.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, August 14, 2017 at the Chapman-Black Funeral Home with Rev. David Head officiating. Interment will follow at the Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Oklahoma.
