Maxine Clifford Burgess, 87, of Cleveland, Oklahoma passed from this life on May 19, 2020, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Maxine was born on August 2, 1932, in Hominy, Oklahoma. Maxine was the daughter of George Washington and Tommi Lee (Bradley) Rhodes. At a young age the family moved to the Shell Creek Area. Following the death of her father Maxine moved with her family to California where they remained until she was 12 years old. The family returned to Oklahoma residing in Cleveland. Maxine completed her education in Cleveland graduated with the Class of 1950. Following high school Maxine began working at St. John Hospital as a lab report courier. Maxine also worked for her sister at the Hilltop Café in Sand Springs. On September 16, 1955 in Coffeyville, Kansas Maxine was united in marriage to Joseph Frank Burgess. Maxine and Joe established their home in Independence, Kansas. In 1956, Maxine and Joe moved to Terlton where they operated the Terlton Grocery. The couple later moved to Washington State for a short time before returning to Jennings, Oklahoma. During the time the kids were in school Maxine worked in Oilton for many years at the City Café. In 2016, Maxine moved to the Baptist Village where she has continued to reside.
Things Maxine enjoyed were Branson, Yahtzee, puzzles and going to Colorado. She also enjoyed watching the hummingbirds, deer and blue birds. Maxine read quite extensively and always looked forward and enjoyed going to the hot air balloon festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Maxine has been a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Cleveland, Oklahoma. and
Survivors include her children Debbye Storckman and her husband Rick of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Sammy Burgess and his wife Dianna of Mannford, Oklahoma, Dusty Rhodes Burgess and his wife Dublin of Silver City, Oklahoma, Kelly Page Burgess and his wife Patty of Walsenburg, Colorado, three granddaughters, Dewi Freesen, Erica Kipper, Brooke Burgess, five grandsons, Joshua Burgess, Stewart Storckman, Lucas Stockman, Patrick Burgess and Steven Burgess, great grandchildren Corvin, Carter, Lilly, Shelby, Sierra, Elijah and a host of other relatives and friends. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, George and Tommi Rhodes, husband Joe, siblings Floyd Rhodes, LZ Rhodes, Raymond Rhodes, Jack Rhodes, Dallas Rhodes, Minnie Mandershied, Ruby Upshaw, Peggy Brown and grandson Mark Joseph Burgess.
Services will be held 10:30 am, Saturday, May 30, 2020 at the Chapman-Black Funeral Home with Brandon Morton officiating. Burial will follow in the Terlton Cemetery.
