Maggie Lavien Humphrey

Maggie Lavien Humphrey, lifelong Hominy resident, passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 in Hominy at the age of eighty five years and eleven months.

Maggie was born July 24, 1917 in Hominy, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Jim and Claudia Lopez. Maggie was raised and attended school in Hominy. She was married to Freddie Sparks, Sr. on June 29, 1931 at the age of fourteen. The couple had twelve children, all of which where raised in Hominy. They were married for nearly fifteen years before Freddie passed away.

Maggie was then married to Arthur Humphrey in Hominy in 1947. They had seven children. Maggie worked for several years as a housekeeper for various families in Hominy and then worked at the Hominy Hotel. She was later employed as a nurse's aide by the Hominy Hospital where she worked for nearly fifteen years. Arthur preceded her in death in 1977.

She was a member of the Church of God in Christ in Hominy for many years and then later was a member of the Loving Baptist Church. Maggie was an avid Hominy Buck fan, always enjoying watching her children and grandchildren play football. She also enjoyed sewing and cooking. She loved to arrange flowers and her favorite flower was the rose. Her most enjoyable pastime, however, was spending time with her family.

In addition to her two husbands, Maggie was preceded in death by her parents; eight children, Yvonne, Movita, Olivia, Darnell, Freddie Sparks, Jr., LaFredrick, Herbert Humphrey and Claudine; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brother, Lewis Lopez; and two sisters, Francis Samms and Geneva Walker.

Maggie is survived by eleven children, Alvirn Miles, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Florene Robertson, Hominy, Oklahoma, Norma Patterson, Hominy, Oklahoma, Juanita Gilkey, Riverside, California, Fredricka Sparks, Hominy, Oklahoma, Leoma Sparks, Hominy, Oklahoma, Louis Sparks, Hominy, Oklahoma, Bobby Don Humphrey, Enid, Oklahoma, Antwine Humphrey, McAlester, Oklahoma, Glenn Humphrey, Tulsa, Oklahoma and Anitta Humphrey, Hominy, Oklahoma; 46 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren, and a sister, Violet Crawford, Hominy, Oklahoma.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, June30, 2003 at the First Baptist Church in Hominy with Rev. Raymond Miles and Zack Crawford officiating. Burial will be at the A. J. Powell Memorial Cemetery in Hominy under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home in Cleveland.
