Leonard Ray Carter, 83, passed from this life on August 19, 2019, at his home in Jennings, Oklahoma. Born on September 12, 1935 in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Leonard was the son of Edward Newton and Nancy “Lucy” Lucille (Moulder) Carter. He attended school in Terlton as well as Mannford. In 1955, Leonard joined the US Army. His initial assignment was at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington. SP3 Carter served his country during Korean War and was a prison guard in Berlin at the infamous Spandau Prison. Upon his discharge in 1958, Leonard returned to Oilton. He later gained employment at a local manufacturing company for a short time before moving to Oregon in 1959. On November 13, 1959, he was united in marriage to the love of his life Sharon Jeannine Rader in Reno, Nevada. The couple established their initial home in Gold Beach, Oregon and Leonard worked for Evans Lumber. In 1965, they returned to Oilton, Oklahoma and he accepted a position with Cramers in Tulsa, Oklahoma and later at Flynt Steel. Leonard and his brother later began working out of a local Union building nuclear power plants all over the United States as well as shipyards as a welder. From 1990 to 1997, Leonard worked for Sweeper Fabrication in Drumright where he retired. After retirement Leonard worked for the City of Drumright as seasonal help.
Leonard liked to spend his free time hunting deer, fishing and camping. Squirrel and K.F.C. were his favorite food, and he liked to eat at the Golden Corral. He also liked fishing at the Copeland Bridge over the Cimarron River.
Survivors include his wife Sharon of the home, four children Cindy Box and husband Mike of Jennings, Oklahoma, Roxane Luster and husband Jack of Oilton, Oklahoma, Gary Carter and Rachel Peck of Jennings, Oklahoma, Carey Carter of Jennings, Oklahoma, eleven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Leonard is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Woodrow Carter, Clarence Carter, Guy Carter, Eugene Carter, and Lawrence Carter; four sisters Dora Cummings, Edith Lawson, Beulah Parks, and Lorene Moffit.
Visitation for Leonard will be held Thursday, August 22, 2019, from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM at the Chapman-Black Funeral Home. Services will be held Friday, August 23, 2019 at 10:30 AM at Shiloh Ministries in Oilton, Oklahoma. Pastor Paul Nix will officiate the service. Leonard will be laid to rest in Highland Cemetery in Oilton, Oklahoma. An online guestbook is available at www.chapman-black.com.
