Joy Bruton

Joy (Claypool) Bruton was born July 26, 1917 in Brownsville, Texas. She was the daughter of Edward and Mable Faye (Hetzer) Claypool. The Bruton family relocated to Altus, Oklahoma when Joy was a small child. While residing in Altus, one of Joyís brothers, Otis passed away. The family later relocated to the Hetzer family farm, in Pawnee Cove, in the Old Mannford area of Oklahoma. Joy worked on the family farm and it was here that she developed her skills as a carpenter. Joy was married to Jesse Bruton on August 14, 1940 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. The couple made their initial home in the Mannford area and they moved to Sand Springs where they resided for nearly twenty-two years. Joy was recognized by her family as a fabulous wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was an accomplished carpenter which she learned from her father as she had to be his eyes since he was nearly blind. She was a very strong and independent woman and taught her family the skills of survival. She ensured her familyís safety, shelter and good nutrition and made sure they didnít go hungry. Jesse and Joy had three daughers, Ellen, Zola and Melva. If a family member was sick, Joy was always there and ready to help no matter what. She often said, ìas long as you have a couple of acres of land, a few chickens, and a milk cow you could make even if times got hard. Her political affiliation was never in doubt as she was a strong willed democrat. During World War II, Joy worked for Douglas Aircraft provding necessary military supplies to the troops overseas. She also worked for many years as a custodian for the Sand Springs Health Center for Doctors Reed, Mund and Russell. Joyís hobbies included fishing, traveling and carpentry. On many occasions, she would surprise Jesse by going to town buying the necessary supplies and adding a room, porch or some project to their home. Jesse preceded her in death on September 27, 1985. Joy passed away on Friday, November 23, 2012 at the Cimarron Pointe Care Center in Mannford at the age of ninety-five. In addition to her brother, Otis and her husband, Jesse, Joy was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Zola Guthrie, another brother, Loy Claypool; and three sisters, Pearl Flectcher, Velma Raines, and Eula Clemens. She is survived by two daughters, Ellen Kelley and her husband Gary of Mannford, Oklahoma and Melva Jo Bruton of Cleveland, Oklahoma; granddaughter, Sondra Jones and her husband Steve of Hallett, Oklahoma; grandson, Jess Guthrie and Phyllis Mabrey of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; greatgrandchildren, Matthew, Zackary, Jessi and Emily Guthrie and Ethen Jefferson; aand two sisters, Zola Harvison of Mannford, Oklahoma and Lola ìSusieî Flatt of Jennings, Oklahoma.
