Jay was united in marriage to his first wife, Manie Fay Tompkins on January 28, 1934. Shortly after their marriage, Jay began his career in the oilfields of Northeastern Oklahoma working as a roughneck, roustabout, and later on a pulling unit. During this time Jay and Marie raised their five children, Buster, Bobby, Claud, Phyllis and Lavina.

In the early 1950's, Jay started his own pulling unit business in Cleveland, Hart's Well Service. Jay was married to Eula Lucinda Cook in Arkansas on December 23, 1952. Jay continued to operate his own business for over thirty years, retiring in the early 1980's. Shortly after his retirement from his well servicing company, Jay and Eula moved to Stroud when he accepted employment with the Sooner Spuds Potato Company. Eula preceded him in death on August 16, 1989. Jay was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cleveland. He loved to travel and just piddle in his garage.
