Jack D. Powell, M.D., age 65, died at his home in West Monroe, Louisiana, on Friday, May 3, after a year and a half battle with colon cancer.

Most recently, Dr. Powell served as an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine, Shreveport at Monroe, Louisiana. In this capacity, Dr. Powell was responsible for the teaching and mentoring of Family Practice residents. He also served as Chief of Staff.

Dr. Powell was born in Hominy, Oklahoma on May 8, 1936. During his early childhood, his family lived in several communities in northeastern Oklahoma, but eventually settled in Cleveland, Oklahoma, where Dr. Powell graduated from high school in 1954. He attended the University of Oklahoma where he received his B. S. Degree in 1958 and his M.D. in 1961.

After a one-year rotating internship at Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, and a Family Practice residency at Huey P. Long Charity Hospital in Pineville, Louisiana, Dr. Powell joined a family medicine practice in Poteau, Oklahoma. He practiced medicine in Poteau from 1963 to 1971, and also served as a preceptor for the University of Oklahoma Medical Center. In 1971, Dr. Powell returned to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center where he completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a Fellowship in Cardiology, and served as Chief Medicine Resident.

In 1975, Dr. Powell served as Director of Medical Services for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After one year, he returned to the private practice of Internal Medicine and Cardiology in Tulsa where he practiced for almost 20 years, until 1995 when he joined the faculty of the LSU Family Practice residency program in Monroe. Dr. Powell was a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice and a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Board of Internal Medicine, as well as various medical societies in Oklahoma and Louisiana.

Dr. Powell served in the Oklahoma National Guard from 1963 ñ 1971. He was a long time member of the Will Rogers Rotary Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was also an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving as a trustee for the First United Methodist Church of Poteau, Oklahoma, and again for St. Stephenís United Methodist Church in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Most recently he has been an active member of the McGuire United Methodist Church in West Monroe, Louisiana.

Dr. Powell was an avid sportsman, especially enjoying fishing, hunting, and skeet shooting. He was a loyal alumnus of the University of Oklahoma, a fan of both its academic and athletic programs.

Dr. Powell is preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Ida Mae Powell. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Judy, and three daughters, Lorrie Hayes and her husband Jim Hayes of Southlake, Texas, Terri Powell of Brooklyn, New York, Mary Susan Powell, of Washington, DC; three grandchildren, Arrington, Ansley, and Madison Hayes; three brothers, Terry Powell and his wife Joan of Claremore, Oklahoma, Gale Powell and his wife Kay of Cleveland, Oklahoma, and John Powell of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Church of the Nazarene, Cleveland, Oklahoma, at 10:00 am, Tuesday, May 7, with internment immediately following at the Woodland Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at a later date in West Monroe, Louisiana at the McGuire United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the McGuire United Methodist Church Building Fund, the Glenwood Regional Medical Center Hospice of West Monroe, Louisiana, or a charity of oneís choice.
