Glen Arthur Johnson

OBITUARY FOR GLEN JOHNSON

Glen Arthur Johnson, resident of Broken Arrow, passed from this life on Monday, April 1, 2019 at the age of 87 years. He was born October 31, 1931 at Old Keystone, OK; the son of Floyd Arthur and Zelda Ima (Bunch) Johnson. Glen moved frequently to different northeastern Oklahoma towns during his earliest years then settled in Cleveland in eighth grade, graduating from Cleveland High School in 1949. He then attended Oklahoma State in Stillwater for a short time before transferring to Central State College (now University of Central Oklahoma) at Edmond where he attained his Bachelor of Science degree. On August 14, 1953, Glen was united in marriage to Juanita Fern Roberson in Oklahoma City. She preceded him in death in August of 1968. On September 20, 1969 Lou Ella (Mills) Bennett and Glen were married in Tulsa. Lou also preceded him in death in August of 2001 in Owasso.
Glen raised his family at Sequoyah Hills Baptist Church in Tulsa where he taught Sunday School to youth and adults, served as a deacon, leader, and even entertainer for the annual Valentine’s Day banquets (His impersonation of Flip Wilson’s Geraldine left the audience on the floor laughing). Glen continued his faithful service to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ throughout his life and was honored with the Deacon Emeritus award from First Baptist Church, Cleveland.
Glen was a manager for Firestone for 13 years where he was a top performer earning “Salesman of the Year” award twice. He then ventured into a new chapter starting Johnson Automotive at 21st and Gary in Tulsa; a business he owned for 23 years.
While in high school, Glen “Jug” was a teammate of Billy “Curly” Vessels and he thoroughly enjoyed telling stories of their times together. One was an infamous nonstop trip with his buddies in a ’49 Ford convertible to Niagara Falls. Glen had many memories about Cleveland. When he returned home in his later years, he helped clear some storage areas and discovered old Cleveland High School trophies and plaques that peaked his interest. This spurred him on to write sports history articles for the Cleveland American and revived his love for his alma mater and community.
Glen’s favorite pastime was playing golf, often with his buddy Mabry. Glen celebrated a memorable hole-in-one at the Bella Vista Country Club. He relaxed to the music of Glen Miller, Herb Albert and Bob Wills. If you were with Glen, you were hearing stories, jokes, and laughter. He had a contagious smile that brightened everyone’s day.
Glen was a loving father and is survived by his children – Debra Lynn Dale and husband Dwight of Henderson, NV, John Arthur Johnson and wife Annette of Tulsa, Robert Grant Johnson and wife Brenda of Broken Arrow, Dianne Lea Weaver and husband Mike of Lewisville, TX and Denver James Johnson and wife Julie of Argyle, TX; a sister Carolyn Smith and her husband Mike of Richardson, TX; 13 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and one on the way. Glen was preceded in death by his parents and his wives, Nita and Lou.

Visitation will be from 3pm – 7pm on Thursday, April 4th at the Chapman-Black Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 1:00 pm Friday, April 5th at the Woodland Cemetery, Cleveland.
