Mrs. Frances P. Shoup passed from this life on March 22, 2019 at the age of 88 in Houston, TX. Frances was born in Hominy, Oklahoma on April 29, 1930, the oldest of four daughters of Oscar Talmadge and Jewell Amanda (Brannon) Gaines. She was raised in Hominy and attended school there, graduating from Hominy High School. After graduation, Frances was married to James Eugene Shoup on December 28, 1948. The couple had three children and raised their family overseas, which included time in Argentina, Singapore, Egypt, Trinidad, and Iran. While in Egypt, Frances graduated from the American University in Cairo with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. Upon their return to the United States, James and Frances lived in Norman, Oklahoma, where Frances obtained a Master's degree in Reading Education from the University of Oklahoma. Eventually, James and Frances moved to Houston, Texas where she remained until her death. While in Houston, Frances was an elementary school teacher and eventually became the Assistant Principal at Spring Branch Elementary School.


Frances was an adventurer and an avid reader. She passed on her love of books and reading to all who met her. She was a beloved teacher to all her students, young and old.

Frances is survived by her husband, James E. Shoup of Houston, Texas; daughter, Linda Pounds of Norman, Oklahoma; sister, Mary Lou Haines of Owasso, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Sarah Hall and her husband Kenny of Norman, Oklahoma; Katherine Taber and her husband Todd of Keller, Texas; Robert Andrew Pounds of Norman, Oklahoma; Paula Shoup of Jacksonville, Florida; Alexander Shoup of Jacksonville Florida; James Shoup of West Palm Beach, Florida; and three great grandchildren, Grace Spores, Alexandra Taber, and Lucas Taber.

Frances was preceded in death by her son, James Don Shoup; daughter, Terri Carter; grandson, James Austin Pounds; mother, Jewell Amanda (Brannon) Blue; and two sisters Jeweldean Stebbing and Melva Joyce Whitewing.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the A.J. Powell Memorial Cemetery in Hominy, Oklahoma. Friends and family may visit an online guest book and memorial page for Frances at www.chapman-black.com.
