Dr. Phillip Lane Cook

September 4, 1945 — March 22, 2023

Dr. Phillip Lane Cook

Dr. Phillip Lane Cook peacefully passed from this earthly life and into an everlasting life with his Lord and Savior on March 22, 2023.

Phil was born on September 4, 1945, in Lubbock, Texas, to S. Lee and Neva Cook. Phil grew up in Cleveland, Oklahoma as a fun-loving and jovial member of the “Cook Clan”. He was the eldest of four children, and he was also blessed to have many cousins he was very close to.

He graduated from Cleveland High School in 1963 and then attended Oklahoma State University where he completed pre-med studies before earning a Doctor of Optometry from the University of Houston College of Optometry after which Phil established a private optometry practice in Collinsville in 1969. It was in Collinsville that Phil met Kathy McMains and the two were married in 1975 and they strived together to raise their family in a God centered home.

In 1982, Phil sold the Collinsville eye clinic and started an oilfield service company which he ran for a few years until the oil and gas industry reached its low-water point in the years following the collapse of Penn Square Bank. After much prayer and soul-searching, he was fortunate enough to restart his career in optometry by joining the staff at The City of Faith Medical Center which was then affiliated with Oral Roberts University. Phil was always grateful for the professional assistance and friendship provided by many of his colleagues, but especially that of Dr. Raymond Townsend and Dr. Gene Reynolds. Phil was a practicing optometrist for over 52 years and his patients loved him. When you were sitting in his exam chair, he would not only ask you “better here? or better here?” as he spun the exam lenses, but he told stories and laughed with you. Phil formed decades-long friendships with many of these patients.

Phil grew up in a family of outdoorsmen and he had a life-long love of hunting and fishing. A regular greeting from Phil to any male family member was “Have you been catching any fish?” He seemed to treat the answer to this question as a barometer for how life was treating you. If you were catching fish, then life must be good. The adventures that frequently occurred on what seemed like the most mundane of sporting outings will continue to provide humorous after dinner banter for years to come.

An avid gardener, Phil worked hard season in and season out to grow a bounty of organic produce that he generously shared with all. Along with his good friend and long-time neighbor, Charles Jackson, he started his tomato plants from seed in mid-winter in Charles’ greenhouse, and then he planted and tended to over 50 tomato plants all summer long. Many people reading this will remember receiving a paper sack full of ripe tomatoes, new potatoes, onions, and, if you were lucky, fresh okra.

Phil had a great sense of humor and he would be the first one to laugh at himself when the occasion presented itself. He loved his family, and he loved the Lord. During sentimental moments with family, he would speak with anticipation of rejoining the loved ones that preceded him in death. His anticipation is complete as he is with them now. Phil was one of a kind and he will be missed by all of his friends and family.

Phil is survived by Kathy, his wife of 48 years; son, Nathan L. Cook and wife Heather of Edmond, OK; daughter, Rachel A. Cook of Edmond, OK; sisters Jana S. Ferguson and husband David, of Fayetteville, AR and Ellen L. Ellis and husband Richard, of Memphis, TN; brother, Warren D. Cook, of Branson, MO; and, a host of nieces and nephews and cousins.
