Darrel Dewayne Hamil

Darrel Dewayne Hamil passed from this life on December 5, 2018, at the age of 81 in Sand Springs, Oklahoma.

Darrel was born on April 23, 1937, at Morrison, Oklahoma to Fred Hamil and Lottie (Pogue) Hamil. Darrel grew up in Yakima, Washington, later moving with his mother and brother Don to Jenks, Oklahoma. He then finished his education at Jenks High School. Darrel joined the U.S. Navy as an aviation mechanic in 1955. He served four years; two years in San Diego, then his remaining time in Japan. During this time Darrel obtained his GED. After returning from the Navy, he lived in Muskogee, attending college there. On August 11, 1961, he was united in marriage to Barbara “Bobbie” Skidgel of Cleveland in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. Following their marriage, the couple resided in Muskogee until 1963. In 1965, Darrel and Bobbie moved to Oregon. Darrel worked as a carpenter until he surrendered to preach in 1967. Following that time he served as pastor in Oregon, Washington, California, Canada, and Oklahoma. In 1979, Darrel obtained his bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. In 1994, Darrel and Bobbie returned to Oklahoma and pastored at Sunrise Baptist Church in Kellyville until 1996 retiring from full time preaching. However, Darrel continued working as a carpenter while he and Bobbie made their home in Mannford, Oklahoma.

Darrel loved to work with wood. This led to his love as a woodturner, making bowls, rolling pins, cutting boards, and various other items for family and friends. Darrel also enjoyed working in his garden, often sharing his fruits and vegetables with his family and friends. Bobbie also got the job of canning and freezing the fruits of his labors. They often traveled during his 30 years of pastoring helping churches and leading people to the Lord.

Survivors are Bobbie of the home; children Kevin Hamil and his wife Ulrike of Mulheim, West Germany, Sharon Poole and her husband Daniel of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Carrie Jackson and her husband David of Mannford, Oklahoma; eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Darrel was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Don and Bob Hamil; sister Mary Ply, granddaughter Hayley Benzler.

Services will be held 1:30 pm, Tuesday, December 11, 2018, at the Keystone Hills Baptist Church in Sand Springs with Pastor Mark Bane officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Oklahoma. Pallbearers will include Mack Mayes, Harold Williams, Ron Wells, Jim Walker, Gene Mills, and David Banther.
