Charles Robert Porter, 78, passed from this life on Sunday, January 19, 2020, at Cleveland Area Hospital in Cleveland, Oklahoma. Born on September 7, 1941, in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Charles is the son of Dale and Nancy Margaret (Mysinger) Porter-Tuck. Attending Sallisaw Schools, he graduated with the class of 1959. While in high school, Charles worked for the Sallisaw Sales Barn. After graduation, Charles joined the workforce, driving a coach bus for Red Carpet, driving the Florida to Colorado route. After Charles’ 30th birthday, he decided on a career change and joined the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office. He served there as a deputy for seven years. Charles then transferred to the Sand Springs Police Department, where he become a sergeant. He completed his career at the Jennings Police Department as their chief. Near the end of the 1990s, he served as a detention officer at L.E. Rader Juvenile Detention Center until he was forced to retire after being injured in a foot pursuit. In the early 2000s, he took employment with Cleveland Public Schools as a bus driver. In April 2016, he married Virginia Landreth. Charles fully retired in 2017.
In his spare time, you could find Charles singing, dancing, playing pool, fishing, and racing pigeons. During his earlier years, you could find him enjoying dances at the Senior Citizens Center in Terlton, Oklahoma, as well as the Longhorn Dance Hall. Skiatook Lake is where he loved to be; fishing tournaments there were frequently attended. In the car or the chair, Charles could be found singing his favorite songs, the radio tuned into the 50s and 60s music. When eating out, Charles had a sweet tooth, enjoying many treats such as the Village Inn’s strawberry crapes. Charles was a member of the Keystone Pigeon Racing Club.
Charles is survived by wife of the home, Virginia Landreth; a son, Carl Andrew Porter of Wichita, Kansas; a daughter, Bobbi Jean Hood of Sallisaw, Oklahoma; 14 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; a god-daughter, Chonna Denton of Sallisaw, Oklahoma; two brothers, CB Tuck of Ramona, Oklahoma and Rex Porter of Idaho. He is preceded in death are his parents, and his stepfather, Beauford Tuck, and grandson R.J. VanZant.
A visitation will be held Tuesday morning, January 21, 2020, at the Chapman-Black Funeral Home from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 PM that afternoon. Honors will be delivered by the Sand Springs and Jennings Police Department. Services are under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home in Cleveland, Oklahoma.
