Chance Childress

Funeral services for Sergeant Chance Childress, U.S. Army, will be held Saturday, April 22, 2006 at 2:00 pm in the First Baptist Church with Chaplain (Cpt.) Michael Hart officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodland Cemetery with Full Military Honors by the 3rd Battalion of the 13th Field Artillery Unit with Chapman-Black Funeral Home, Inc. of Cleveland, Oklahoma in charge of the arrangements.

Chance Childress, the son of Susan Paulette (Bohannan) Childress and Troy James Childress was born October 19, 1985 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As a young child he grew up and attended Lewis and Clark Middle School in Tulsa. He also attended East Central High for a short time before transferring to Prue High School. While attending school in Prue he was a member of the football team. During his freshman year Chance started as the Prue Rockets quarterback. Chance then later enrolled to finish his education at the Thunderbird Academy in Pryor, Oklahoma. While at the academy Chance obtained numerous awards for his achievements.

After his graduation Chance entered into the service of his country. He joined the United States Army on October 22, 2003. He attended Basic and Advanced Individual Training as a Multiple Launch Rocket System Crew Member at Ft. Sill. He was assigned to the Bravo Battery, 3rd Battalion, 13th Field Artillery at Ft. Sill on March 2, 2004, where he was assigned as the Launcher Driver of B12 upon arrival at the unit. Sergeant Childress participated in various field training exercises and deployed to Ft. Chaffee, Arkansas for final mission preparation before deploying with the unit to Iraq in January of 2005 to support the Global War on Terrorism. He took part in firing the first Global Multiple Launch Rocket System mission during Operation Restore Rights in Iraq. Upon the return of the unit to Ft. Sill Sergeant Childress transitioned from Launcher Driver to Gunner.

Sergeant Childress received the following awards and decorations during the service of his country, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Good Conduct Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Overseas Service Ribbon

Chance loved to play and watch football, basketball and baseball in his spare time. While playing baseball at a young age he was an active member of the team that won the Tulsa City Title. Most of all Chance loved to be in the outdoors and be with his family and friends.

Chance passed away Sunday, April 16, 2006 from injuries received in a motorcycle accident in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 20 years 5 months and 27 days. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Cal Bohannan, paternal grandfather Otis Childress, infant sister Melissa and an infant son Caleb.

Survived by his mother, Susan Childress of Tulsa, Oklahoma; father and step mother, Troy and Vickie Childress of Cleveland, Oklahoma; brothers, Logan Childress of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Zac Childress of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; Blake Clark of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; maternal grandmother, Delores Bohannon of Cleveland, Oklahoma; paternal grandmother, Pauline Childress of Blackburn, Oklahoma; aunts and uncles, Melody Treece of Cleveland, Oklahoma; Richard and Carey Bohannan of Owasso, Oklahoma; Sandra and Gary Edgerton of Cleveland, Oklahoma; Roger and Debbie Lewis of Cleveland, Oklahoma; Laura Ready of Sand Springs, Oklahoma cousins, Jamie Sweatt, Klint Treece, Curtis and Aimee Bohannan, Joe and Mike Edgerton, Renee Husey; special friends, Eric Baugh, Zack Shaw, Adam Issa, Adam Wright, Joe Johnson, John, Seven, Austin Haws as well as numerous relatives, friends and all of his military family at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
