Funeral services for Carmaleta Shannon will be held Friday, June 23, 2006 at 10:00 am in the Sanctuary of the Mannford Full Gospel Church. Officiating will be Pastor Larry Schiller. Burial will follow at the Jennings Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home, Inc.

Carmaleta was a longtime resident of Jennings. She was born March 28, 1920 in Ponca City, Oklahoma to John Henry and Myrtle Alice (Martin) Prather. As a young girl, Carmaleta was raised in Arkansas where she received her education. At the age of 15, she met the love of her life in Dutch Mills, Arkansas Melvin Shannon. After five years of courtship, Carmaleta and Melvin united in marriage at Stilwell, Oklahoma on June 28, 1940. To this union there are two children Melvin Douglas and Joyce Darlene.

Carmaleta and Melvin established their home at Jennings in September of 1942. Throughout her years of marriage to Melvin, they have traveled to many different places. While Melvin continued working on the pipeline, they have been all over the United States; some of the places include Florida, Texas, Minnesota, Wyoming and Montana.

Carmaleta was a very loving person enjoying every minute spent with her children, grandchildren, family and friends. At the age of 15 in Maramec, Oklahoma Carmaleta was baptized and has continued to serve her Lord to the fullest. As a young girl Carmaleta would search for the tallest tree, climb as high as possible and sing as loud as she could. Carmaleta was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Jennings, Oklahoma as well as the Mannford Full Gospel Church.

Carmaleta went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday evening, June 19, 2006 at her home in Jennings at the age of 86 years 2 months and 21 days. Her parents preceded her in death as well as her husband Melvin on October 13, 2003, one son Melvin Douglas Shannon on February 14, 1981, two brothers Maxie Lloyd Prather and Sam Douglas Prather.

Surviving are her daughter, Joyce and husband Bobby Ryan of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two brothers, Floyd Prather of Jennings, Oklahoma; Kenneth Prather of Twin Oaks, Oklahoma; two sisters, Peggy Pulliam of Ogallala, Nebraska; Roseztta Adams of Sidney, Nebraska; grandchildren, Teresa Darlene Spencer of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Timothy Eugene Spencer of Mannford, Oklahoma; Vicki Jean Shannon of Enid, Oklahoma; Christina Lynn Shannon of Enid, Oklahoma; Susan Cherie McClain of Tulsa, Oklahoma; seven great-grandchildren including, Sarah Cherie McClain, Tulsa, Oklahoma and Ryan Wade McClain, Tulsa, Oklahoma as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
