Bettye Louise Martin

Bettye Louise (Scott) Martin was born on July 16, 1930, in Waurika, in Jefferson County, Oklahoma. Her parents were Lazora Joy (Brandon) Scott and Oscar Thomas Scott, Jr. Her father was a rancher, while her mother was a homemaker. Her parnets and elder siblings, Helen Wallace, Oscar Thomas Scott III and Majorie Barrett all pre-deceased her. After attending schools in Addinton, Waurika, Stephenville, Texas and Tonkawa, Bettye graduated with great distinction from Cleveland, High School, Class of 1947. After high school, she worked in the Cleveland National Bank and in the movie theatre in Cleveland, which was then owned by her father. In 1949 she met and, in February of 1950, married, Harold Dean Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Dean martin of Cleveland. Harold had served a two-year stint in the Army Air Corps and had begun to attend classes at OSU. Shortly after their marriage, Harold was re-called to the service and began a career in the Air Force that would not end until 1968. The family, which was enlarged to three with the birth of a daughter, Rebecca Ellen, in 1953, began the life of frequent moved that then characterized the life-style of a military family. Bettye and her family lived in Massachusetts, Hawaii, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana and Italy. Harold returned to civilian life in 1968 and the family moved to Oklahoma City. After divorcing in 1976, Bettye moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1978 and remained in the area until her death. Bettye passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at the age of 80 years eight months and twenty seven days. Survivors are her daughter, Rebecca Martin of Ossining, New York as well as nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents Bettye was preceded in death by her brother, Oscar T. Scott, III, two sisters, Helen Wallace and Marjorie Barrett. Graveside Services will be held 2:00 pm Monday, April 18, 2011 at Woodland Cemetery with Rev. David Head. Burial will be under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.
