Biography

Chapel services for Nellie Turnbow will be held 6:00 pm, Friday, January 15, 2010 in the Chapman-Black Funeral Home Chapel with Otis Spencer officiating. Burial will be held privately in the Bethany Cemetery under the direction of Chapman-Black Funeral Home.

Nellie was born May 20, 1936 in Coweta, Oklahoma. She was the daughter William and Travis Virginia (Belle) Swartwood. As a young girl Nellie grew up in the Tulsa area. At the conclusion of her education Nellie accepted employment at the Kerr Glass Plant in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. In 1964, she later gained employment with Continental Industries as a welder and pipefitter. Nellie continued working there for several years before returning to school. She obtained her beauty operators license and opened Coiffeur’s of Today in the early 1970’s at 21st and Garnett. She owned and operated the business for many years and later opened two additional shops. Nellie continued the operation of the beauty salons until the late 1980’s. At that time she moved to Hallett, Oklahoma and opened another beauty salon which she operated for several years.

Nellie had many hobbies but what she enjoyed most out of life was going to the horse races and playing the slot machines at the casino’s.

Nellie Vivian Turnbow passed from this life on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 in Cleveland, Oklahoma at the age of 73 years.

Survivors include her two daughters Vivian Brown of Cleveland, Oklahoma, Paula Spencer of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; one sister Norma Leach of Chino, California; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends that mourn her passing. In addition to her parents Nellie was preceded in death by her brother Henry Swartwood and one great grandson Jordan.
